Request cargo insurance in the portal
What this covers
How to request cargo insurance for a shipment from inside the portal. For customers who want their goods covered against loss or damage in transit. New to cargo insurance? Start with Why insure your cargo.
Before you start
Have your cargo value ready — the commercial value of the goods you're shipping. This is the basis for coverage and premium.
You can also add insurance when you request a rate or accept a quote — see Add-ons at quote time.
Steps
Open Insurance. Select Insurance in the left menu.
Start an insurance request. Choose the shipment you want to cover, or start a new request.
Enter your cargo value. Provide the commercial value of the goods. Coverage and premium are based on this amount, so enter it accurately.
Submit the request. Send the request to your Prime Freight team, who confirm the coverage and premium for your shipment.
Tips
Request insurance before your cargo ships — coverage can't be added once goods are already in transit or after a loss.
The value you insure (your total insured value, or TIV) should reflect the full commercial value of the goods so you're not underinsured.
Troubleshooting
You already have your own policy. If you insure cargo through your own provider, you don't need to request it here — see Using your own cargo insurance.
You're unsure what value to enter. Use the commercial invoice value of the goods; if in doubt, ask your Prime Freight team before submitting.
