Run a rate search: inputs & why we ask

Edited

What this covers

How to run a rate search in your Prime Freight portal and what each field is asking for. If you're new to the tool, start with What is RateSearch?.

The more accurate your inputs, the closer your rate is to your final invoice — so it's worth a minute to get them right. To learn why the two can still differ, see Why is my invoice higher than my quote?.

Before you start

Have these ready:

  • Where the cargo ships from and to — origin and destination.

  • How much cargo — pieces, weight, and dimensions (or your container count for a full container load).

  • When it's ready — your cargo-ready date at origin.

  • What it is — a general description of the goods and their value.

Steps

  1. Open RateSearch. Select Rate Search in the left-hand menu. The search form opens.

  2. Enter your origin and destination. Type the origin and destination ports or cities. The route you choose sets which services and rates appear.

  3. Choose your shipment mode. Select ocean or air, and for ocean choose full container load (FCL) or less than container load (LCL). Not sure which fits? See FCL vs LCL vs parcel: which to choose.

  4. Enter your cargo details. Add your weight, dimensions, and piece or container count.

For LCL and air, your rate is based on chargeable weight — the greater of actual weight or volume-based weight — so accurate dimensions matter. See Chargeable weight explained.

  1. Add your cargo-ready date. Enter when the goods will be ready to leave origin. This determines which rates are valid for your shipment window.

  2. Enter the cargo value and description. The value supports optional cargo insurance and customs, and the description helps confirm the goods can move on the rate shown.

  3. Run the search. Submit the form to see your rate options.

Why we ask for each input

Input

Why it affects your rate

Origin and destination

Sets the lane, carriers, and base freight rate

Mode (ocean/air, FCL/LCL)

Different services are priced differently

Weight and dimensions

Drives chargeable weight for LCL and air

Cargo-ready date

Determines which rates are still valid for your window

Cargo value

Supports insurance and customs figures

Goods description

Confirms the cargo can move on the rate shown

Tips

  • Estimate high if you're unsure on weight or volume. Your final invoice is based on actual measured cargo, so a realistic estimate avoids surprises. Your manufacturer's figures are often low once packaging and palletizing are added.

  • Don't see your lane or have unusual cargo? For oversized, hazardous, or off-list routes, request a custom air or ocean rate and your Prime Freight team will prepare a quote.
